How to convert DVD or CD to an ISO on Mac OSX | VIDEO TUTORIAL
These are the steps on how to convert a DVD or CD to an ISO file..
This allows you to essentially combine all your DVD/CD files into a single image file which you can save on your computer..
By default the Disk Utility tool converts the disc to a cdr file, which is essentially an iso, so an easy rename makes this option very easy..
Note, you may experience different results in some instances, but overall this process works..

Burn DMG file in Windows to bootable macOS DVD disc
To download macOS High Sierra DMG Installer, and for explanation, visithttps://www.winytips.com/burn-dmg-windows-macos-bootable-dvd-disc/ This video explains how you can extract, and burn InstallESD.DMG, the Mac OS X installer file for OX 10.7 Lion, OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, to a bootable DVD in Windows 7, 8 or Windows 10. However, the method is just the same if you have a custom High Sierra DMG file with you..
Why you may want to Burn DMG in WIndows..
1. To create an offline, bootable backup of Mac OS X installer, downloaded from the Apple app store, just by using Windows tools..
2. If you have a MacBook Pro, Air or iMac with only bootcamp working, and want to Install Mac OS X by burning InstallESD.DMG to a DVD..
3. To run Mac OS X in Windows using VitualBox or other tools..
Note: You would need a Dual layer DVD to write InstallESD.DMG as the expanded size of the DMG file is greater than what it can be handled by a normal 4.7GB disc.

Copy DVD or CD on Mac Using Disk Utility for free
If you want to make duplicates of your optical disks (CD and DVD) on your Mac, you don’t need to buy any expensive software

I have these old DVD-R discs. They have files burned to them. (What I’m trying to say is they’re not playable dvds with menus on them. no they’re data dvds.) My 2017 iMac obviously doesn’t have a disc drive so I’m using my Lacie Blu Ray burner to plug it into the computer in order to pull these files off the DVD-R and onto an external hard drive. I’ve been successful at pulling some of the files off of the disc. But as I go down the list of files on the disc, as I get towards the bottom of the list, and try to pull those files off the DVD, the file will either start to transfer and cancel after so many megabytes, or itll just sit there and never transfer. The error I get says: The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in «interview» can’t be read or written. (Error code -36). I’m trying to watch your tutorial and I chose the CD/DVD option and a few minutes in, it says «operation cancelled». Any advice for fixing this?
Well, heck. I followed your instructions, and now I have burned a copy of the DVD, but it’s in cdr format, and won’t play on a regular DVD player or a PC. So, now how do I convert this file to burn it so it will pay on any DVD player? I downloaded Burn, as suggested by another YouTube video, and it’s not working either. Ahhhhh! Help!
I ve got a C2D 2006 iMac too and it´s great, it has been used at home (it was my daughter´s rig) for ten or eleven years and it works just fine. Snow Leopard it´s a better choice for this kitty than Lion and Tiger are, btw. Beautiful, strong machine!
Hello Puck, thanks for the tutorial, I was able to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard on my Macbook Pro with this tutorial. I got the DMG file from the pirate bay. Cheers and keep making videos with your face in it!
Which program are you using to record your screen? I have been looking for a good software that I can do «zoon in and out» like yours and also ZOON IN when I click or stop the mouse. Like you have done in your video. Could you help me please? Thanks!
Why does my disc utility look different? I don’t have those same icons and there’s no «burn» either. I only show boxes for; first aid, partition, erase, restore, unmount, info. I’m running Sierra. This all came about when I received one of those drug store burned DVD’s of old 8mm movies, I wanted to save the disc to my hard drive with the intention of maybe burning a duplicate eventually. I THINK I managed to save a copy to my documents (think I pretty much did it the way you show here) though I can’t open it with anything, will that file still burn to a blank DVD okay? Is there an app I can get that will allow me to open that file and view the video? Do I have to get an app just to burn from that file? 3 years now and every single day with this damn Mac is like my very first day with a computer!
This was a great video. I followed your instructions but my dvd still wont burn. I am using macbook pro and I am using my superdrive. I get all the way up the burn and I see everything that you discussing in the video but when i click burn nothing happens with superdrive and I have used my superdrive often for CDs but now i am trying to make a DVD
I don’t have an internal optical drive in newer. mac (unfortunately!!) so will this somehow work with my eternal disc? Once I get an image (if I can) can I eject the original disc and insert the blank disk into the external drive and complete the process?
Thank you so much for making this simple video. This is my first Mac and I’ve never burned a CD or DVD in my life! You made it easy. It’s burning right now a movie I wanted to copy for a friend. Seems to be working perfectly. Thank you!!
Hello Matias thank you for sharing this info I have a lot of movies to put in2 my Mac . I have a question that hopefully you have time to answer. My prima has a eternal hard drive full of music and her son erased it all. She’d like to know if there’s a chance for her to recover that music. Many people have told her that it’s not completely gone, so the question is how can she recover this music if it’s still there?
Thank you! Very informative and easy to follow. Seemed to work great but when the video converted it flipped it upside down. It was a video taken on an iPad then transferred to my MacBook Pro. Any suggestions?
it gives me a message saying » not allowed or not authoring allowed » something like this. what am I doing wrong, changed the files names to number, changed temp file location… but nothing seems to work..help?
Matias Yours is the best of any descriptions of copying a DVD on a Mac. However, I’m afraid to start. I cannot see that you’ve mentioned inserting the original DVD that is to be copied or «burned» onto a blank (DVD+R) disk.
I’m 82, not too swift with this stuff but struggling. Guy jug32@comcast.net
how do you get original personal dvd into computer from external drive? mine hows u but it is an alias. so I’m confused how to get the info into computer so it can be copied or burner. This is already too confusing/
Used to be so much easier when optical drive was inside the computers;
I was in a time crunch and haven’t made a dvd in years. your tutorial was perfect. Still stymied as to why apple has made everything so proprietary over the years. earlier generations of iphoto etc were much easier to use and being an elderly person I have very little knowlege as to how this real works. Again kudos for your succinct relatable tutorial
If you are trying to teach someone how to do something on Youtube, you need to slow down your speech rate. Some people are much older than you, have hearing problems, and cannot follow what you are saying, even when they can repeat and repeat the dialogue. Some of us oldsters are still trying to learn things.
I am, no doubt, the stupidest watcher you’ve ever had. I have a mid-2015 iMac 27″ desktop running Mojave. I inserted a blank Memorex DVD into my external OWC Mercury Pro Optical Drive (made by LG). No disc icon appears on my desktop. I see it listed in Disk Utility, which shows zero capacity for this blank DVD. Dead in the water.
The USB did bootup, so it works!!!! Thank you so so much. I bought a new drive for a Macbook Pro 5.5, I installed it myself. Well, I turned it on and it did nothing but light up the screen, lol. I thought about giving up and just pay for a bootup drive, but i came across this video, wooooow!!!! Thanks. I installed an WD BLUE 2.5 in. 250GB SOLID STATE DRIVE SSD, Just incase anyone wanted to know what kind I used. I will be posting an update soon.
my friend i tried this multiple times and it never shows up. please help me when i formatted my usb do i pick fat32 or exfat? i have been picking exfat and then following your instructions and nothing comes up:(
please help me dear! i can´t boot to install mac os 10.4 in my mac g4, just the HD is avaliable when i boot the machine and turn «c» key, the pen driver is also not avaliable, is there some trick to configure in OS system before? (i´m using a burned iso dvd from net maked on a pc, and a pc usb keyboard)
I know this is an old video but can this be done with the actual Mac OS install disc? I have a Snow Leopard install DVD I want to extract the image from, convert it to an ISO, and use it for a virtual machine in VMware on a Windows PC.
I followed your instructions perfectly. I just downloaded Burn 7/17/2020. The regions from which I could select were only numerical, not PAL or NTSC, so I chose 1 since I live in the USA. It will play on my computer, but I need these DVDs to play on DVD players that are hooked up to television sets not on computers. I really appreciate your great ability to explain this process in a way that I can easily understand. Please advise! Thank you.
hi channel 48 i really like your video but mine problem is a little different let me tell you my problem i have macbook air 2015 and i mistakenly delete my yosemite operarting system and i try to install it from internet recovery to download ios yosemite but due to low speed internet i was unable to do it and i see your video will it work for me because i dont have any kind of ios operating sysytem pleasse send me instruction thanks
Also, a DIST file extension is used for distribution script files for MacOS X version 10.4 and later. The script file is used during system installation process by Mac OS X Installer tool. Distribution scripts allow for customizaton of Mac OS X software.
My nostalgia story seems like it’s identical to yours, except mine was a 20 inch aluminium iMac, 2.4 GHz Intel core 2 duo processor with 2GB ram, a 500GB hard drive and leopard as the default OS. Otherwise it’s identical. That’s how I learned to edit film in iMovie, I still have the majority of my old photo collection which I set up in iPhoto, I made my first ever website in iWeb, and GarageBand and logic became the backbone of my semiprofessional music career which I still have to this day.
after burning the dmg to dvd transmac says operation successful or something like that but ican’t open the dsik not with transmac not from my pc bootloader not from windows explorer what should i do PLS HEEEEEEEELP oh and btw every time i access the dvd from transmac it says ‘no mac volume found’
THANKKKKKKKKKKKKK YOUUUUUUUUUUU sooooo muchhhhhhh god bless you SIR….. You saved me soooo much time.. Do have a site where i can download all the different version of IOS for my IMAC without going to apple site???????????????
So I get the USB formatted and everything, get the DMG file on the USB stick, The mac picks it up in disk utility, but when trying to boot from it in the disk select it’s not there. What am I doing wrong?
Ok. I went back 2 years in comments to prevent repeating a question. I did not find it. I am trying to duplicate a music (audio) CD but the new image option is graysd out. It is not an option; only «burn» why is this?
The SuperDrives on my early 2005 PowerBook G4 15″ Aluminum (1.67GHz), mid-2007 black MacBook, mid-2009 white MacBook A1181, and mid-2010 white MacBook A1342 all make that noise. It’s normal, so just ignore it.
Tip on making the video:)
Whenever you’re doing someone inside the OS, record using A screen recorder that gives less trouble and less size and easier view for the user,
When you go out of the OS, Go use mobile.
Then Combine the Clips on a Editing software. render:)
Hey and thanks for the video! I followed all your instructions but Transmac always fails at around 30% while doing the «Restore with disk image» with a «Could not write to mac volume» error message. I’ve done everything according to your instructions, and I’ve tried several dmgs in case they were corrupt, but the problem persists. I’m trying to reinstall OSX on an old, mid 2007 iMac. Could you help me please?
Mister where do we get the dmg of mac OS X I can’t understand why you do no mention how and where that’s what pisses me on YouTube every time some things missing and must watch many video before you have done
Hallo…
Hey i downloaded el capitan os from getintopc but cant find a dmg file and supposedly the up loader is known for malware or just not being very secure. Did you ever make a bootable el capitan usb? can you please help me?
will this make a dmg file bootable?I have 10.5.8 leopard dmg for my IbookG4 mid 2005 version that needs to be restored or reformatted whatever apple calls it. anyway all i have is a windows to burn the disc on. the mac was zeroed out on the «free space» by mistake and so it has to boot up in the DVD…anyway i hope my question makes sense. im trying to make a bootable disk using a windows that will run on Mac.
Thank you so much! I agree that your info and presentation are by far the best after watching a dozen on this subject! Especially the difference between data DVD and the one for DVD players! But…….I had the same problem of ‘Burn failed to encode one file’ as Ellen Dean in the comments. Then I found: Express Burn Disc Burning Software by NCH software and it worked very well. Here is the link. All the best!

Most don’t know, since they never really publicly announced it those Front Row sounds were actually created by Pixar after seeing the software. The team showed Steve Jobs with placeholder sounds and he was basically like «I know who to go to» and a team drove to Pixar in Emeryville and had them create the sounds.
Oh man, I have so many computer nostalgia stories that I don’t know if I can fit them all in one comment.
I’ll stick with the Mac side of things: When I started elementary school, it was all PowerMac 5xxx series computers (the really old all-in-ones, from before the iMac was introduced-the school mostly had 5200s, with a few 5400s and 5500s here and there). They switched to iMacs either right before or right after winter break, with some 5400s and 5500s staying around until… probably 2005 or so, when the whole district gradually transitioned to eMacs. But yeah, lots of nostalgia for old Macs, even though I was a PC user at home. (Incidentally, I’m on the lookout for a very obscure program called ClassWorks-not to be confused with ClarisWorks-which we used on those older Macs…)
Oh yeah, and at my middle school, we were not prohibited from installing Dashboard Widgets, so everyone had a lot of fun with those. There was a Mario clone called JumpmanIV that I used to play a lot. It sucked, but it was still fun in its own weird way. And because I liked pretending to be a radio DJ, I would load up my Dashboard with a bunch of weather widgets for different cities near Chicago.
This was my first iMac as well I bought it secondhand on eBay back in 2010 or so. It was running this same OS if i’m not mistaken at the time, and it couldn’t even handle playing YouTube videos. I tried really hard to like it, but it was a piece of shit and I ended up selling it on eBay a few months later to get a MacBook Pro 2008 (the big bulky all silver one) and it ended up being a really great laptop for me. Today I type this on an awesome 2012 iMac with a gigantic screen, as my 2012 MacBook Pro sits next to us playing music. I’d never buy an Apple product new, but the refurbished market is the way to go. I’d take a 2012 Apple computer product over any 2020 Windows laptop.
I kinda need some help here, i did everything what u did from another video that i saw, but when i load up the bootable pendrive, i got a prohibited sign, can i fix it? This is already givin me an headache. Thank you
Which program are you using to record your screen? I have been looking for a good software that I can do «zoon in and out» like yours and also ZOON IN when I click or stop the mouse. Like you have done in your video. Could you help me please? Thanks!
I had very poor luck with OS X. My first Macintosh computer was a mid 2013 MacBook Air. I bought it just when Mavericks came out so the first thing that happened when booting it up and getting it up to date was losing all the pretty UI elements I had been lusting over for years from my little Windows corner. I still appreciate all the multitouch gestures and clean, easy-to-use interface stuff but I miss the way it used to look. Good thing I now have three iMac G3 DV and one iMac G3 DV SE so I can get all the early OS X I want (three machines will be auctioned off after the pandemic so more people can enjoy the glory of transluscent plastic.
The sibilance in your voice when you make «s» sounds is literally painful to my ears if I keep the audio loud enough to, for example, hear the malfunctioning SuperDrive, among other things in your video. Consider rethinking whatever method you use to check audio before uploading videos.
Hi. I’m using an old 2006 MacMini with Show Leopard. I have some protected audio CDs I’m trying to archive. Turns out only My MacMini combo drive properly recognizes these as audio CDs instead of DVD-Video CDs, but disk utility cannot copy audio or «non-data» CDs. Some help would be appreciated, thanks!
Anyway to run IMG-Burn under Wine?
My version of Burn isn’t recognizing any media files personal videos.mov I recorded myself, nor anything else. Anybody got an idea what the issue could be? I’m Catalina 10.15.3 (19D76) running Burn Version 2.5.1 (24).
i must have been doing something wrong cause i can’t get rid of snow leporad on this imac that you are now showing.. its my first also.. but i think the upgrades killed it.. i replaced the tape in the screen because it kept going crazy and loosing its original screen like it went to patwork things missing.. then it would just freeze up mine has only 2 gig harddrive… when i put in the disks that came with it nothing like i watched you do happens… can u help…. this is my email. davidpclouthier@gmail.com i will watch and watch again to see if i can fix this thing…
tiger was on my first mac (iBook G4). I really miss the aqua look..probably wouldn’t go for a Mac nowadays. It looks way too clean now. Catalina is just not very fun to use, it has no character and isn’t playful like the old versions.
This iMac was my first Mac experience with running MacOS snow leopard (which fun fact to this day is still my favorite version of MacOS). Then I eventually got one of my own after using my brothers for a little while.
awesome video. great step by step instructions. easy to follow along. everything worked great EXCEPT my video did not upload automatically to iTunes and i haven’t been able to get the m4v movie to iTunes. do i have something set incorrectly? any tips. thanks so much.
I had Mac OS tiger on my school computer that everyone could use in class but my first Mac that I actually owned had Mac OS Mojave I know that’s really recent and that’s because I just got my first Mac computer
I started with macOS Sierra, because that was the time I actually had enough money to buy a MacBook Pro. I still use the computer to this day, except now it has Mojave on it thanks to DosDude’s Mojave mod. Although I’m updating to Catalina Monday, once again thanks to DosDude!
well my first mac was the 32 bit MacBook1,1… and this very machine is still with me, tho it got its 3rd logic-board (it used to have a 2.16 GHz C2D for like 6 years, but after that broke it got back the original 1,83 GHz CD). This machine already was split into pieces when I needed its LCD and built up my main MacBook from a machine I used to buy spare parts (but it had a housing in much better condition). Later when I got an even brighter LCD from another MacBook, I put back together all parts from my original MacBook1,1 from 2006 and re-built this very computer with all their original parts I could find. I tried Tiger, but then I installed Snow Leopard, as Tiger is way too outdated when it comes to my internal networking and some other stuff. You even can run the lastest version of SL-compatible Firefox and get a nearly complete modern web experience. On the other hand, it runs debian GNU/Linux 9 with the MATE desktop customized to look at least as good as Mac OS X even if debian 9 MATE does not have a working Global Menu. Beside this I got my self-made dark-mode-theme with lots of style lend from Mac OS X. Anyway… it’s half past 9 P.M…. good night!
It wasn’t that smart. All it said was that Mac OS can’t be installed on a volume with the Windows NT filesystem format. As for the first version of OS X I used, it was Developer Preview 4. I still have my CD-R from that. It was a download from Apple rather than a nice physical release. I also have my public beta in its nice big cardboard jacket. Come to think of it, I could reinstall either of those on my glorious old original iMac.
