I am Rockabilly documentary
A short documentary about rockabilly culture in Sweden..
For a lot of young and old Swedes, golden 50s and 60s with shiny American hot rods, rock’n’roll and pinup style is the stuff that the dreams are made of. Backyards of Raggares are full of classic cars like Pontiacs, Mustangs and Chevys, pompadour haircuts and dotted pinup skirts are used confidently in everyday life. Every year these classics are brought out to the «biggest and baddest classic car show in the world» Power Big Meet in Västeras, where everybody likes to boast with the fact that there are more American 50s and 60s cars registered in Sweden than in the USA itself..
«I am Rockabilly» follows a rockabilly girl Carina and her family on their way to the Power Big Meet to get a glimpse to the Swedish Raggare world..

Гранж часто путают со стилем рок. Да, у них есть схожие черты, но нет не менее различий больше!
Рок это в основном черный цвет, металл и кожа. Это «крутой» образ..
Гранж это фланелевые рубашки, вытянутые свитера и рваные джинсы/колготки/платья..
Это немного «бомж-стайл»:D Теперь вы ничего не перепутаете!
Тем не менее, очень часто встречается микс этих 2х стилей, что тоже смотрится довольно интересно..

Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly, Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent, Stray Cats(For that 80’s revival sound), Chuck Berry, Richie Valens…The Beach Boys are NOT rockabilly! A 64 Impala is NOT a rockabilly car, Bu-font hairdo’s are NOT rockabilly, 60’s Chanel dresses are NOT rockabilly..Dyed red Leather is NOT rockabilly!(The girl is hot, though 6:30) It seems with the cars, you totally missed..they are from the 40’s or 60..NONE FROM THE 50’s..On the other hand, your daughter is drop dead gorgeous..

I really love the 50’s and 50’s cars since I was a kid… I own a ’58 Plymouth here in Europe but I don’t exactly feel like a 100% rockabilly lover. I love the music, but I prefer the original music from back in the day, rock and roll, doowop, singers and their big bands, etc… Sometimes it seems to me that most of what’s left from 50’s culture is modern rockabilly songs, exagerate hair cuts, beer, exagerated dresses, tatoos, hot rods and chopped cars… Like the movie Grease maybe, which is what most people has seen. And it is great, but that really seems to me like a «fashion» that came out from the 50’s kids in later decades, like in rebelion or making fun of the 40’s and 50’s more serious time and «american dream» their parents had, and that has just gone on, powered by some american tv shows, etc…. What I mean is that all this way of life is extremely focused in that kind of modern rockabilly and far from a 1950’s more «innocent» reality, I mean, there’s plenty of footage or any kind of info from back in the days and it has mostly nothing to do with all that. Anyways, Sweden is a country that really has a strong culture on that, plus have some friends restoring cars there, its something that in other european countries just don’t happen, plus its very complicated to make imported cars street legal, and very expensive.
Harder to find real greasers. More Rockabilly, which is kinda close. Rockabilly are more tattooed up and clean, with more restricted music in my opinion. Not just classic 50s rock, but lots of lesser-known African-American blues too were popular with greasers. But style wise, these guys have more of a modern fad aura about them. Seems to just be the cool thing to do there I suppose. All the Swedish gals are doing it wrong though. WAY too much make up, hairspray, and piercings (and prior-mentioned tattoos) if they are going for an authentic 50s look. Women had less makeup, little to no tattoos, only ears were pierced, and although it seemed like they were going for something 50s reminiscent in the hairstyles, it still seemed off.

Одежду в «стиле гранж» надо покупать в секонд хендах (если не нравится б\у,отличный вариант фамилия).И дело тут совсем не в цене (или идеологии гранжеров) Вещи известных дизайнеров,они хоть и пытаются выглядеть состарено,но по ним прекрасно видно,что она новая и из хороших материалов,что убивает напрочь в них весь «гранж» и ничем не отличает от других обычных вещей. Рубашка от условного YsL сделанная аля «гранж» проигрывает рубашке на пару размеров больше из секонда,именно в данном направлении.
P.S Фамилию я выделил потому,что хоть вещи там и новые,но они уже полежали некоторое время,подвыцвели и в принципе выглядят,как надо
I live in South Middle Tennessee between Memphis and Nashville. Home to Rockabilly and it’s strange to me to see it enjoyed somewhere like Sweden! Don’t get me wrong, it’s GREAT. Just weird becuz I see it as a local thing. It’s heritage. My Gramps was a Greaser and listened to Rockabilly and Outlaw Country. So I grew up steeped in it.
I listen too any kind of Rock’n’Roll.From the 50ties,Garage 60ties,Punkrock 76,Psychobilly,…I think it is a Way of Life.The DiY Spirit,I know that from the 80ties when we created our own Style.I also like that it is on the country.Sweden must be very beautyful to drink Beer and Party in the Summer.
Great job Liisi!! It was really nice seeing the perspective from Sweden surrounding this culture. But trust me, we are all better reliving this time than actually living it. I do wonder the interpretation of the confederate flag for these non-Americans though. note: I am a Rockabilly event promoter in Philadelphia born in North Carolina, raised in Virginia (the South)

Been doin’ this since 1980, and most of the stuff in this video, I have no clue on where the hell it comes from… Rockabilly, old cars, okay, but the rest… for me, it’s in my heart and soul and the music, not in the clothes… but, everyone’s got their choise and oppinion, guess I’m too much hardcore, or such
The other thing is, when some weirdos in Europe rip off some American subculture revival, it’s «cool»…but if an evil yank does it (e.g., mod revival in California) people go berserk with hatred and rage. British «rockers» are passed off as 100% British but everybody knows they ripped it off from the US.
Мне почему то кажется, что грандж нельзя создать, а к нему сам приходишь. Какие-то старые вещи у мамы тыришь, какие-то у бати, какие-то в том же самом секонде, а рваные одеваешь просто потому, что тебе лень зашивать. А на колготы денег нет.
Hi Stellaa, glad you like this too. There are such places, we have been going to them every year since the really great / busy days in the 80s and 90s. But we are lucky as we live in the UK, so Weymouth, Caister and then Hemsby for many years, now also the Rockabilly Rave etc. In years past Hemsby was 4000+ fans with many 50s cara & bikes especially from abroad eg Germany, less so at Hemsby nowadays but the Rave is still very popular and in the summertime too which is better. There are other weekenders across Europe and the USA too (Tom Ingram who started Hemsby is now in the USA doing Viva Las Vegas). Just search «rockabilly weekender» etc, there lots of places to go, and no doubt in Scandanavia too, is that where you are?
I love this so much, I am the exact same.
But I hate it so much that there are people like this but then spread all over the world. It would be awesome if there was an big event that all the rockabilly people get together at one place, and all dance and do fun stuff. Yeah I would like that so much..

Лена, здравствуйте! Люблю вас слушать, но хочется дать совет. Почему вы не обратитесь к косметологу, тем более ваша подруга (как я помню по видео) является косметологом! Ведь это решило бы проблему такого плотного нанесение косметики на лицо, мне даже жалко вашу кожу. С наилучшими пожеланиями!
