Windows media player by default does not support many video formats and subtitle formats. However, we can add codec packs and plugins to make windows media player work like any other player available. This is a real quick video on how to load subs into windows media player.Anyway I have to mention that this simple method works fine only with few file formats live AVI this may not work with MP4 format.. Here are the steps: (1)first go ahead and open the folder which has the video. (2)If the subtitle file is in somewhere else put it into the same folder as the video file. (3)And then rename the subtitle file if it doesnt have exactly the same name as video file. (4)Then play the video,probably subtitles will show up. (5)if not right click on the little icon in the right top corner. (6)right click on the bottom part of the opened window.. (7)Hover over play. (8)hover over captions and subtitles. (9)then make sure you have checked the «On if available option «. however if you want to load subtitles using this method with all the kind of video formats such as MP4 you will have use alternative video player rather than windows media player as there is no solution yet to fix this error.VLC player codak pack will load subs this way without any problems with all the file formats.. Best thing to do is to uninstall windows media player, find the program, put it on a hard surface, get a hammer, hit it repeatedly until it is in tiny pieces, pour petrol on the pieces, set it alight, piss on it then throw the remains into a shark infested lake. After that, download VLC, or Pot Player, or Gom Player.
The easiest solution is to use another video player altogether like VLC that supports different file types and subtitles right out of the box.
But for folks who insist on using Windows Media Player or can’t use anything else for whatever reason, this will do the trick!
How frustrating it is that anyone would need to go to such lengths to simply play a movie with subtitles. It’s as though Microsoft is being willfully obstinate.
This video indirectly helped me. My wmp didnt have this local subtitles plug in so searching for the plug in led me to the website https://sourceforge.net/projects/wmpsub/ i downloaded it and installed it and now i have got this plug in and able to play subtitles in my wmp! Thanks so much!
Actually the DirectVobSub (aka VSFilter) will add most video files that are viewable through the DirectX/DivX API like WMV to the list of files that can have subtitles. For MP4 files, you would want a 2015 plug-in that is only referenced as wmpsub. Search for «Local Subtitles for WMP» in SourceForge-dot-net; it should say «A plug-in for WMP9 and above…» in the description. Also note that the first download mirror site does not seem to have the installer/MSI anymore; go select one of the alternative mirrors.
I have both installed on my computer (and they work fine) so I don’t need to install another player, but I have used VLC player long time ago and it was a good media player even back then.
After clicking on background I don’t have local subtitles listed in the box. I always use vlc player cause I can drop files into it. Would like to use the WMP. What do I do next? I’m using windows 7 pro

Hi. Tried the advice. It’s not working. I added Advanced Codec from Modern Geeks. Has not worked. Downloaded VLC Player and that’s not loading subtitles too. None of the other media players on my computer are playing these subtitles
FFS Microsoft, in every single (other) video player you can just choose ANY subtitle file with ANY name in ANY location and it works! This renaming of subtitle file is like going back to 90’s, this company will never learn and innovate anything.

С MPC мне помогло, спасибо. Смени фоновую музыку, она ужасна! Ставь что то приятное и современное, немного энергичное, иногда можно и классику, но еле заметно. К примеру «M.O.O.N.–Hydrogen (Hotline Miami OST)» Это просто идеально на фоне.

I want to add japanese subtitles to the Home Alone movie, but the website that VLC uses to automatically download and save subtitles does not have it in japanese. So I have to download manually from another website, but I can’t get it to work..
В potplayer есть еще способ добавления аудиодорожки. Запускаем фильм правой кнопкой на «AC3» (эта кнопка в нижней менюшке управления, как на видео 1:27) «Переключить аудио дорожку» выбираем файл. Чтобы переключиться на нее AC3 -левой кнопкой мыши выбираем.
