  • This is my kind of comfort food. I also like American hamburger goulash (of course whenever you say that, some fool tells you to buy Hamburger Helper). The problem is, I have had what I like at various potlucks but have never been able to duplicate the exact flavor that I like. I am not looking for Hungarian goulash so I use sweet paprika which brings it close to what I want. But something is still not quite right. I think it’s the sauce. I’ve tried tomato soup which is currently my favorite, tomato juice, and V-8 Juice. I’ve also added catsup and once or twice tried a little sugar. I didn’t like those at all. Nothing has been quite right. I am also not looking for anything that resembles spaghetti sauce. I don’t know what I’m missing. Hamburger, paprika, tomato soup, onion, garlic, salt and pepper, and macaroni. There, I vented.

  • I do love this recipe. I have made it at least a dozen times now. I wanted to tell you though, Dave, there is a slight mistake. In the written instructions under the ingredients, there is no mention of the macaroni noodles being added in.

  • Not adding sour cream and butter to the sauce… these guys missed some very important steps…The sauce is crap without being enhanced by sour cream n butter… Everyone who cooks mac n cheese knows this too. That’s some black peppery asf lookin’ hamburg hodor helper. The sauce is what makes it good, not peppering the sh`t out of the meat, like the dingle berry in the video.

  • So you put Maggie, onion powder, garlic powder and creole seasoning. How much Maggie cubes do you put and the seasoning. I am excited just brought my hamburger helper online where they sale American food. I am from the U.K., can’t wait to receive it

  • I’m the weird one who likes to put the seasoning in with the meat alone for a min or two as I feel it gives the beef more flavor. I will add the milk, water, and pasta after but I do think it gives more flavor to the meat. Also on a side note I’m surprised this even exists no insult I just thought of something easy to make and wondered if there would be a how to.

  • I did this last night. I like to add steak seasoning to the ground beef. Of course I also add. A box of mac and cheese. The kind with the soft cheese in it. I like a little more pasta and cheese to the mix. I also like to add Texas Pete hot sauce. A packet of taco seasoning. I just for the heck of it I had a can of pinto beans.Shared something with a friend next door. And they thought it was wonderful.of course everyone can make it however they like it.

  • i have a faster recipe and tast just as good take a pan boil 2 pounds of macaroni and strain when done sit aside in a sauce pan cut up a block of velveta cheese and add milk stir till thick add hamburger and mix it up its done enjoy ps you can add frozen vegetables to it just cook in seperate sauce pan like brocclia and its really good… if you dont want hamburger you can use ground turkey its just as good non greasy

  • If you click the link to his site you will get the amounts.

1 3/4 cups of elbow macaroni

    1 tbsp of chili powder
    1/2 tsp of onion powder
    1 tbsp of sugar
    1 tsp of garlic powder

1 cup of cheddar cheese, grated
    2 tsp of Worcestershire sauce

  • A Little Help for Hamburger
    or «How now, ground cow?»

This doesn’t really have a name since it was totally ad libbed. Let’s just call it Hamburger Whatchmacallit Skillet.

    1 lb. lean ground beef
1 medium sweet red onion, finely diced
3 medium Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and sliced thin
    2 tsp. minced garlic
    1 Tbs. Worcestershire sauce
    1 Tbs. Lawry’s seasoned salt
    2/3 cup milk
    2/3 cup water
    2/3 cup sour cream
1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese

Brown ground beef in a large deep skillet over medium high heat. Add onions and garlic and sauté until onions are translucent. Add potatoes, milk, Lawry’s, Worcestershire, and water, bring to a boil, then cover, reduce heat and simmer for about 15 minutes or until potatoes are fork-tender. Remove cover and simmer until liquid is reduced. Add in sour cream and shredded cheese, stirring until combined and cheese is melted. Taste and add salt and black pepper to taste.

It’s not exotic, but it is simple and easy. You might try adding additional ingredients, such as sautéed sliced mushrooms and/or diced bell pepper.

  • Can you tell me what’s in the white package? Cornstarch and??? Can you make one from scratch? At 61, trying to keep as much processed food out as possible (except when the husband keep sneaking in the canned sausage white gravy and corned beef hash!!! Yuck and yum at the same time) Thanks for sharing your recipe

  • My favorite Hamburger Helper flavor from decades ago was Zesty Italian, but it’s listed as discontinued but for all effective purposes it’s actually been changed into the Italian Sausage Flavor.
Know of a good homemade recipe for Zesty Italian?

  • My mom never bought the box stuff. The homemade stuff is better for you and easier on your digestion. If you are a bit adventurous you can make all kinds of meals with pasta and meat like this. Just choose the sauce or cheese combination you like. And you can use beef, ground turkey, diced chicken, or tuna. My mom would make a pasta with chicken and broccoli in a cheese sauce that was to die for! Good stuff and pretty easy.

  • thank you sir for appropriately making this meal i was very upset just a second ago watching some woman make this meal incorrectly well not really incorrectly just adding extra flare in her opinion  while realistically she was just destroying this classic american meal  I ensured to give you a like and sub just for the situation that i was going through thankfully now the frustration in my testicles have been diminished because of you THANK GOD  AND THANK GOD FOR HAMBURGER HELPER

  • This was honestly amazing! Totally tastes like the original hamburger helper from my childhood! I made some minor changes and it was perfect. I added a half a tsp more of paprika, 1 tsp of allspice, 1 tbsp of vegetable broth powder, didn’t drain the fat from meat and didn’t add any cheese. Also used fresh chopped onions and garlic. Yummy!

  • I made this and it was sooo delicious. I seasoned the meat with some Kent Rollins red river ranch seasoning which is soo good on anything. Perfect balance of seasonings. I also added a can of stewed tomatoes, topped with more cheese at the end till it was very melty.

  • Ah you kicked it up a notch with those seasonings. If I’m making mine with tuna instead of beef, I like to add some Old Bay and parsley. Then sprinkle a little paprika on top to give it a pretty color, make it look gourmet, why not

  • I know this is an old video, but I have to tell you what happened. I watch this video and immediately knew I was going to make it. I was planning it for yesterday and asked my husband to pick up some of the ingredients that I didn’t have. I love hamburger helper, but in the past few years something has changed about it. I have Crohns Disease and for some reason Hamburger helper started hurting my stomach pretty bad. I also noticed that the noodles were soggy when eating leftovers, almost like mush. My husband brought home the ingredients and I planned this for dinner yesterday. I looked high and low for the macaroni he bought but could not find it. After 22 years in the same home, you think he’d know where it goes Any way, I ended having to make this today. I decided no crime would be committed if I made it for lunch, at 10:30am…you know, a kind of brunch thing, I was that excited to taste it. That 25 minute wait while it was simmering was torture because it smelled amazing. This recipe did not fail to make me happy. The flavor is fantastic and the best part, no stomach pain. I don’t know what the difference is, possibly the boxed kind had preservatives and things added that affected my Crohns when changes were made to “improve” Hamburger Helper. I will never buy a box of it again. I’m wondering what would happen if I added a small can of tomato purée in the next time. Have you ever tried that? Have you made other flavors with potatoes or rice? I am excited about being able to eat this! I also had some for dinner later and it was even better! ✌️

  • Hi… I tried this recipe tonight…it was brilliant!! As an American living in the UK I have had to learn to make loads of my favourite foods from scratch. The best part is my family aren’t very keen on most of my childhood favourite foods LOVED this! They want it in the weekly rotation

  • Looks good! I tend to agree with those who say no to the cheese slices (as we call them here in Canuckland, lol), and yet I understand you are trying to match the flavour of HH as closely as possible. I used to make my version for my kids. HH is just chock-a-block full of additives and sodium. And the flavour? I must ask what flavour? Cooked HH once and was so put off by the chemical taste I said nope, never again.
    Jenn

  • Made this tonight and it was spot on. If the macaroni isn’t quite tender enough in the stated time just add a “little” more water and cover on simmer, cook a little longer, and stir often. It was really good. Just like Hamburger Helper!

  • Now this is what Hamburger Helper pretends to be but never will be: a good rounded rib stickin’ tummy warmer, worthy of whining for seconds, and even thirds, any time. Well done, sir!

I still remember when HH first hit the market, looking at a box and thinking, «Why? I can make this from scratch faster and cheaper than I can get it out of this box, and without the chemicals.» But people sure do buy it.

  • I haven’t had HH out of the box in several years (decades, actually). After I broke my leg in a motorcycle accident, my first wife (stupidest woman on the planet) fed that crap to me every night for 6 months… That being said, this looks a whole lot better, Larry! It’s that box I guess… Just can’t stand seeing that box.
