Have you ever wanted to make a backup copy of your DVD or Blu-ray movies just in case your kids destroy them? Or are you looking to turn your disc based movie collection into a digital collection which you can load to your home media server? Well there is a way to do this. You’ll just need a computer with an optical drive in it (Blu-ray/DVD drive) and a couple pieces of free to use software; namely MakeMKV and HandBrake. And if you happen to run into a disc that MakeMKV just doesn’t like there is an alternate way to rip the movie using a program called AnyDVD HD. In this tutorial I walk you though how to copy your disc based movies and create digital copies you can then load onto your smart phone, tablet, computer or use with Plex, Kodi or other media servers of your choice. So enough blabbin’ let’s get this road on the show! XD.

Copy DVD VIDEO to COMPUTER
Students often find it difficult to choose between our digital downloads and DVDs. This solution offers the best of both worlds. Order the DVD and extract the digital video to play directly on your computer and other devices. You can also extract the tab files for a print copy along with backing tracks and other lesson materials. You can even download an app like Wondershare to change the video format to fit on other devices including iPad and phones. Doug Marks, Metal Method guitar instructor: http://www.metalmethod.com

How To Copy DVD Movies To A Computer
This tutorial applies to movies stored on the DVD Optical Format, and assumes that you have a DVD-ROM for your computer. If you don’t have a DVD-ROM, you can purchase an external one from Amazon or your local electronics store. In the tutorial, I use an LG WH16NS40 Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Writer..
Note that you might not be able to copy certain DVDs because of DRM (digital rights management)..

In today’s video I will be showing you how to copy a DVD to a DVD using Aimersoft DVD Copy. So this is a program that can pretty much copy any DVD movie to a blank DVD disc so it can make an exact duplicate copy of your DVD movies. This program is for Windows computers so if you’re on a Windows computer right now go ahead and click the free download link on your screen or the link in the description. That will start an instant download of this program, and you can try it out for free. So click the link and it will start the download. Once the download is complete it will end up in your downloads folder on your computer. Go to your Downloads folder then double-click on the icon to run and install it. You can go ahead and buy the full version to you copy unlimited DVDs or you can try it out for free. It has a free trial so if you don’t want to buy it now you can just hit the free trial button. It’s really easy to use. First thing you want to do is insert the movie into your DVD drive on your computer and then select it on the source. Select your DVD drive, and once you select it on the source you should see the DVD movie name right there. I have Superbad inserted in mine. So I got, I’m going to copy the Superbad DVD movie, and then the target folder is where it’s going to copy onto your computer temporarily. And then once it’s copied to your computer you can burn it to a disc. Okay so and then the output type you want to choose DVD 5. That’s really important because you want to be able to burn it to a normal DVD-R disc, a blank DVD+R disc so choose DVD 5 in the output type. In the copy mode it has a couple different options here. You can select to copy the whole movie or just the main movie with the menu or main movie without the menu. Okay I just want to copy the main movie without the menu. You can choose whatever whatever you’d like. I’m just going to choose main movie without menu, and then once you’re ready double check your settings. And then all you have to do is click the start button. It will start the copy process. Now depending on your computer speed it will take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. Mine is going to take about 45 minutes to copy a regular DVD movie. Okay so once the copy is complete it will automatically open up the Windows folder, and here is the Superbad folder. And if you double-click into the movie folder you’ll see this Video_TS folder and then right-click and send to DVD drive. That’s one way to burn it to a DVD. It’s going to ask you to insert a blank disc. Another way to do it, another way to burn it to a disc is just select the VIDEO_TS folder and then if you’re on Windows 7 you see the burn button right there on the top menu bar. Just hit that, and it will ask you to insert your blank DVD disc. So now all you have to do is just insert your blank DVD disc. It can be a DVD-R or DVD-RW depending on what your computer can write to, and once the burning process is complete you will have an exact duplicate copy of your movie. So that’s how to copy a DVD to a DVD. The easiest way to copy a DVD movie to a blank DVD disc..

Thanks for the link, Andy! It worked! I burned a copy of a DVD on my PC DVD player. Instructions are a bit different in the link you provided but EZ to follow. I wasn’t sure what setting to use for reading so many sectors per time [1, 16, 32, 48, 64] and the setting to jump so many sectors when meeting bad sector [1, 16, 32, 48, 64]. I used 32 for each. Do those settings make a difference in the quality of the burned CD?
Then, it asked what speed I would like to use to burn the DVD, 8x or 16x. I chose 16x. Does that make a difference? Would the picture look different if I chose 8x? The Sony DVD-R’s that I have are rated 1-16x. Thank you.
When will they start charging you and will this automatically charge or will they ask? I don’t need an automatic charge to my bill. I need a free program to use on computer just to copy from one DVD to another. Thank you.
It worked for 1 of 6 DVDs. It continued to eject the disc saying there wasn’t enough space (I had a 4.7GB disk and there is 5.27 on the one I’m trying to copy. I guess clicking the option for ‘5’ doesn’t work for all of them, even though it worked for 5.36 on the first one. UGH!!!
can you tell me please what do you use for screen capture? I’ve never been a windows person, can’t find reliable and free soft for this purposes, and, if you don’t mind Line 6 Spider Classic 15 or Marshall MG15CF? frankly, i am inclined to Line 6 (by the way, what i am doing wrong with orange amps? they all sound… as it shouldn’t to me)
Thank you for watching. Currently we are not offering support via the comments area. However, as mentioned in this video, this is a tutorial on copying data DVDs and will not work for copy protected movie DVDs. To copy those check on our video on using RIPit software. The process will show you how to decrypt the movie. Copying the movie at that point is just a matter of burning the uncompressed video folder.
Maraksot78,
I have seen your tutorial its awesome You are my boss from today, i have one question Marak,i have maximum 400 dvds & i want to
save all these on external hard drive, which is best harddrive to save movies, my question is all standard DVD’s can upscale to 720p & 1080p? kindly Reply.
Why mess around. Just use Make MKV to rip and TS Muxer to quickly make Blu ray disc folder or TS or m2ts or or demux any or all separate streams. Is is very fast because it fast because it doesn’t have to encode anything. when you use Blu ray disc folder you can delete what streams you don’t want. By default it will put in chapters every 5 minutes or you cam adjust that. A 45 gig movie to author into a bluray folder take an average of 5 minutes depending on you computer. Before you start with ts muxer download a program called BDInfo. it will give you the main movie index to put into TS Muxer. These programs are all free and TS Muxer and BDInfo both work out of folder-no installation except Make MKV. After about a week or so it will tell you it is outdated and you can download it again and it will work. Make MKV removes all encryption.
Very clear and I have subscribed, however, I followed the instructions but it does NOT seem to work. I can see the name on my desktop but in a DVD type control panel. It does NOT automatically down load in Itunes and I cannot drag it into Itunes. I do not mind paying for the application IF IT WORKS, I have Sierra on my PC. Any suggestions on how to get this working correctly?
followed your video and was able to burn a my dvd on a dvd-r. however, when i play it on my blu-ray or PS4 player, it doesnt work. if i play it on both of my PC’s it works fine? can you help me on this?
When I use the MakeMKV and Handbrake method my movies are always in megabytes, here are the movies I’ve made digital backups of so far.
A Bugs Life (1998)
Batman (1989)
Scooby-Doo! Pirates Ahoy! (2006)
The Halloween Tree (1993)
The Hunchback Of Notre Dame (1996)
Toy Story (1995)
Toy Story 2 (1999)
Toy Story 3 (2010)
Maybe it’s just that all of those other then Batman (1989) were animated movies and animated movies are usually shorter then live action movies but I don’t know, oh the movies are still in great quality but I’m just saying.
@matiasbilbao this was very helpful thank you! I downloaded ripit and saved movie to itunes;however, I had a pop up that asked me to buy the license and it only went away after I deleted the ripit app. I am concerned because when I looked up more information about it I found comments from others who had a similar experience and said the program had been hacked and that it has not been updated since 2015. Anyone experience this issue? Anyone concerned about your computer being hacked as a result of downloading the app?
Well, everything went very well ’till I tried viewing the new DVD-R in my Samsung BR player. No can do. The new DVD video does not display. The DVD-R, however, DOES play on my computer. What’s going wrong?
Man, this guy is an idiot. Awful guide and clearly very little knowledge about the software and computers in general.
4:30 «You can’t exactly tell which one is the right language (paraphrasing)»
That big fucking arrow at the beginning of each title allows you to expand to see the contents (fucking basic file explorer GUI feature, BTW), which includes the video, audio tracks and names (English, French, Spanish, etc.), and subtitle tracks. You want to put a 4GB video on a phone? Are you mental? That’s not «space-friendly.» You don’t need a 1080p video on a 5-inch screen, even if the panel is 4K.
Fucking Christ, dude. If you’re going to make a guide, make sure you know how to actually use the software. And you don’t show how to customize anything on Handbrake, or that the other titles in MakeMKV are extras which are required to make a full backup of the disc. You showed a paid program that copied a BD to HDD/SSD. You can do that with Windows Explorer, although the DRM/bad sectors will still be there, there’s a much better chance that a local copy will decrypt fine in MakeMKV as there are less likely to be scratches that kill the reading. Not saying that’s what happened with your example, but yeah, you don’t need paid software to do this at all. Sometimes your drive/disc just suck.
But on my DVD I have about 20 such vlc files although the DVD has only 10 titles. And when I play any of them in vlc, the title window opens and I’m able to choose any video, but there are jumps and repetitions. So how do I know which file is the real title 1,2,3 etc to copy?
So i have downloaded movies and it’s worked great so far. However i only have one more DVD to download before i have to pay for a ‘Licence’ which i dont want to do. Anyway i can use RipIt without having to buy a licence?
Hi Brian: Buddy I really need your help here: MakeMKV v1.14.5 win(x64-release) started:
Automatic checking for updates is enabled, you may disable it in preferences if you don’t want MakeMKV to contact web server.
Error ‘Scsi error ILLEGAL REQUEST:READ OF SCRAMBLED SECTOR WITHOUT AUTHENTICATION’ occurred while reading ‘DVD+R-DL ASUS SDRW-08D2S-U B911’ at offset ‘1048576’
I’ve tried six times, but I always get the same message: «Not Responding.» I hear the optical drive running up and down, but the program always stops responding after it recognizes the DVD. Any suggestions?
Make sure you compress and in preferences under the compress option check the «import into iTunes (Apple Format)» and «delete after importing» to remove duplicates. Then you can stream from Apple iPad,iPhone, Touch and play on AppleTV. If you are not using Apple products do not select iTunes format.
Wonderful tutorial, Mr. Jamieson. I wonder if you know a projector Weimar 3, and can speak of its quality and so on? I’m new to Super8 film but in love with this medium and excited to learn new techniques and so on. Warm thanks!
Great video. I bought RipIt and I have been transferring some of my favorite movies and TV series into my iTunes library and watching them on my iPad. Great tutorial, thanks.
How about a tutorial on burning GoPro video to a DVD?
If you want to backup your movies and TV shows FASTER you can now enable GPU encoding in HandBrake and utilize Intel QuickSync, Nvidia NVENC or AMD VCE encoding to speed up the encoding process by 3X or greater!! But what if I’m gonna copy a series? I have a series that I want to copy, and there is a total of 4 episodes in each disc ( Except for the last one. That one has 5). What should I then do? The exact same thing, or is there something else I that should do?
Back again. I downloaded this program. And it worked GREAT! as you said. This is the real deal. I was using 1clickdvd copy at over $60 bucks. It was so slow. This takes the input video and records it on my computer then burns it to a blank DVD 5 minutes or so and it is simple setting. Surprisingly good and fast. I am going to buy the single user for $29 bucks or so, and they give free updates. I am also going to buy the video editor, since I do video productions. I have over 3,000 videos on over 14 YouTube channels, Vimeo and Daily Motion. Way cool!! Google Bill Keefer or on YouTube mlsprovideos
I have a problem with make mkv I have certain blu rays with tracks this tutorial helped on so many other dvds and blu rays on my certain ones I’d like to do is keep all the tracks in to one file… how do I do this
I’ve been digitising my movie collection, used handbrake for all my DVDs with no issues. Now I’ve started using makemkv for Blu-ray, they playback fine on vlc player but as soon as I plug hard drive into tv the sound cracks on almost all Blu-ray movies but not tv series. Any ideas? I’m considering trying to compress them in handbrake, is there a way to do this into a smaller mkv?
Ok, here’s my dilemma, I’m wanting to get the full series of Rocko’s Modern Life on DVD from the U.S. as they’ve never released it here in the UK in full, just a selection of ‘Best Of’ DVD’s, which has half the collection missing, so I’m considering buying it from the U.S. but, of course U.S. DVD’s are region 1 and UK players are region 2, so how can I copy the discs AND the menu’s (so it’s an EXACT copy of the DVD) and then burn it to some blank DVD’s in region 3 so I can then watch them?
Basically, I’m wanting to clone the discs from NTSC to PAL exactly as they are on the discs, with the menu’s and everything, as opposed to just taking the episodes off it (which I don’t want), I want to make a direct copy basically so I can play on region 2, can you help?:-)
I’m just trying this for the first time. I started with MakeMKV and popped in my Blu-ray and it’s been «Loading» for quite a few minutes with no screen changes. Should I give up and try the alternate method?
I disagree for the following reason. Copy/pasting the entire movie onto a location on your computer and using VLC to play the movie works but is a terrible alternative. This would create a huge 5GB-8GB folder on your computer and use up space. The movies wouldn’t be nicely organized. Thirdly,, it wouldn’t be useful on your iPhone, iPad, AppleTV, Roku, Android, etc! More importantly, it would NOT be decrypted permanently. The suggestion, while well intended, is a poor one for most users needs.
Jesus, get to the point!!!!! You talking about how you shouldn’t ramble on and getting to the point is STILL you rambling on and not getting to the point. I put you on 1.25 speed, now I’m going 1.5 speed
Maraksot78,
I have seen your tutorial its awesome, i have one question Marak,i have maximum 400 dvds & i want to
save all these on external hard drive, which is best harddrive to save movies, my question is all standard DVD’s can upscale to 720p to 4k?.
when dvd movie file copied on Harddisc, its VOB,BUP & IFO files.can we set this file into one file and attach movie picture titie of this folder
so the folder look nice with movie picture.
Hi, Thank you for the Tutorial. One question… I have tried changing the settings in Handbrake but cannot get Dolby DTS to be in the finished file. The file from «Make MKV» has the DTS track in it, but I can’t get it into the compressed file.:-( Any suggestions?
Honestly surprised it works. Cant complain my first movie I got on my hard drive was jumanji and I was able to use movies and tv that was already on my laptop and didnt even need vlc, even though I already have it for other things. Subtitles and audio were there and it was super simple. Thanks! Didint realize it was that easy to put my DVD’s on my laptop!
I downloaded MakeMKV and it successfully downloaded 5 movies onto my external hard drive. Then it stopped downloading them. It goes all the way to the screen that shows progress of download but the time just keeps increasing with no downloading progress.
Andy, awesome video. Thank you so very much for this video. I’ve been searching all over the internet for a free program to do exactly what this program does and no more but could never find one. Yes I even tried file hippo with no luck. I really, really appreciate it for the link. You’re the best man! Thanks again
Help me, Matias! Your video seemed the clearest and easiest that I came across for this um, let’s call it ripping -fart joke here. I have a Mac laptop and I updated my software first (10.6.8), then I downloaded Ripit. No problems so far. Then I dragged it to my applications just like you showed. But, every time I try to open it, it closes/quits immediately. Like instantly. I tried deleting the app and re downloading it and turning it off and on again. Now I’m all out of ideas. Don’t make me go to the apple store for something a child can do!!! Help me Matias, you’re my only hope!
DVD’s are going extinct so, in my opinion, this is the best way to make a backup. All media will continue to be offered more and more as digital only. This allows you to back it up on an external drive. However, this video does not show you how to make an exact DVD duplicate.
Thank you for making this video, I have been using MakeMKV for like 3 or 4 years now. I learned something I didn’t know. It never dawned on me to right-click on the file description window and to select unselect all. On DVD’s it usually was no big deal to click the checkmarks for each file you didn’t want to rip. But on Blu-Rays, some of them would have so many it was a pain in the butt to unselect so many. It makes me wonder what all else I don’t know about MakeMKV. I have one problem I haven’t figured out though. For some reason, the audio seems a little low on playback from Plex to my Roku’s. I have to turn the volume up to watch them and then turn the volume back down when watching regular TV. I haven’t tried using HandBreak yet since Roku can play MKV files in Plex with no problems.
this totally and completely helpped me thanks sooooo much soo sooos soooo sooos ooos ooo soooo much i will suggest this video to all my friends thanks sooo much i mean it thank so so so so so so so so so so so much!
Way too complicated and still too many steps. Whatever happened to DVD X Copy that the feds took down. All you had to do is install the operating software and open it and put your DVD/BLU-RAY in and it would copy to a temp folder. When done coying the disc would come out and you would insert your blank DVD or Blu Ray DVD and close and it would auto-burn. You could also select how many copies you wanted. When done burning your DVD/Blu Ray DVD would eject. That’s it! I would watch Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon on my laptop it also had a direct stream-burn option, so you could burn these live programs or any stored programs. I used to add movies to «my stuff» folders on Hulu, Amazon, and Netflix and burn from there. It auto removed region codes, anti-hacking software, and security patches that may have been installed on disc from REDBOX also. It removed EVERYTHING! TO this day, I’ve yet to find something that can even compare to that.
I’m finally doing this for the first time, I have a 5960x Haswell-E processor, CPU is at 100%. I set the priority to low. This isn’t going to fry my CPU, is it? I’m watching my temps with Core Temp right now and my cores are at about under 70 Degrees C.
There’s no shortage of tutorials for making copies of movies, but no one seems to be able to tell me how to make an exact copy of a DVD, with menus, bonus features, the whole shebang. Why is this so hard?
Here’s how I figure out which track I need to rip.
1. Open the DVD using the VLC media player.
2. Go through the DVD’s navigation to start playing the movie
3. Once the movie is playing, go to Playback->Title in the VLC menu and you will see which track is being currently played.
Do you have any external usb 3.0 blu ray drive which I can use? I built my PC in 2012, but I’d rather have an external blu ray drive since it will be hard for me to add an internal drive as my BIOS screen can’t longer be accessed due to a new video card which I added last year. Thank you.
I’m looking for something that involves with copying CD, DVD or Blu-Ray data to a bank disc (thus what I’m trying to mean is that I am trying to use original CDs, DVDs or Blu-Rays only when I’m copying their data to a blank disc [which is obviously prevented from their copyright protections]). On a side note, I’d appreciate it if you suggested about who to contact or what website to go to if this is NOT what this video is about, you didn’t know how to copy «CD, DVD or Blu-Ray data to a blank disc» and knew who to contact or what website to go to for that information. It’s not just you who I’m asking, it’s the other YouTube video describers as well. Thank you.
You can actually convert DTS audio by putting in your make mkv ripped file in handbrake and make a small MP4 choosing DTS audio and changing the output to ac3 saving the video as mkv. Then load it into tx muxer and extract the audio to put first in line below the DTS or removing DTS from list in TS Muxer. Run TS Muxer and you have your M2TS Bluray movie with ac3 (dolby Digital)
Hey Andy thanks for this vid I went ahead and purchased the single user,However the quality lags a bit in pixels I’m not sure why it should be clear since it’s a straight copy program?Anyone with knowledge feel free to help me out thanks
I am finally getting around to turning my dvd collection into digital copy collection. had too many older computers laying around. Used 2 750GB drives from a sonicwall server, put them in a Supermicro pc dumped by a building maintenance shop. Listened to your video, installed Plex, and I away I go. Thanks for your informative video, it was a great help.
