  • To transfer files from your PC to the 2017 Fire 10, just plug the USB charging cable into the PC and copy and paste. This simple process doesn’t work for the 2019 Fire 10. When you plug the charging USB cable into the PC, none of the Fire file structure shows up.
In order to copy the files now, you must EACH TIME, first plug the USB cable into the PC, then go into Settings > Connected Devices > USB [Which only appears when the cable is plugged in] & select File Transfer.
There doesn’t seem to be any easy way to make the 2019 Fire switch to File transfer when plugged into a [low power device] PC.

  • I like my HD8 2020 because I wanted a smaller tablet. I already have the HD10 (the last version), which is good for watching videos, etc. But it very unwieldy when trying to read a book. The HD8 is much better for reading a book. When I bought mine, I got a 20% discount, bring the price to $71.00. Then I traded a 2017 Fire Tablet, and got another $35 credit. So the price was quite worth it as a device to consume content.

  • I can’t figure out how to load a file (drag and drop from PC) to be globally recognised by all profiles. The files are on the device, but only viewed by the profile logged in at the time of loading files on. It’s the same with downloading apps.

  • Hi Erin, As always, a very informative review. So happy that you do not waste time «unboxing» the devices you review. About certain features not being available in Canada, maybe you should invite Jeff Bezos up to Alberta for a home-cooked, real Canadian cuisine dinner w/ you and Roger. That might bring him around!

  • I have a feeling the fire 7 is practically the same as the fire 8.

Tips for increasing the performance of those tablets.
    1. Use a micro sd and offload as many apps and photos etc onto it as possible. The more of that 16gb that is freed up, the more faster it will run.

    2. Increase the battery life by getting a cheap $10 portable battery charger. Will increase your battery by hours

    3. Fix the glare by getting an anti glare screen protector made for your tablet

    4. Don’t be stuck into the amazon ecosystem. You can download the google operating system onto your tablet, or you can download pretty much any google play store app by downloading the aptoid tv app which is an alternative google play store

Also don’t let the plastic casing fool you. The fire tablets are very durable

Also be aware that despite what you may see on videos on YouTube, these tablets are not good for gaming on cod or fortnite. Maybe the 8 plus might be a little better, but I know the 7 is not because I own one

  • Great Unboxing! There is a serious conversation that needs to be had about «ad» devices that refuses to natively include google play, to restrict alternative media content….It’s 2020 and yet company like amazon justifies «contract culture» with with low price points. Heck even Sprint these days doesn’t lock you into ridiculous agreements…and yet amazon lockdowns devices natively and offer no service contracts or «unlock policies». For devices you buy outright…‍♂️

  • As a Mac and iPad user it’s nice to see you reviewing other OS’s I’m not familiar with. For a while now I’ve wanted to see some kind of review of Android apps on Chromebooks and how well they work. Like the the iOS Kindle app is way better than the web app, but is the Android Kindle app on a Chromebook any good? Does it have all the features missing from the web app? The Google Music web app doesn’t let you offline playlists, but the iOS app does. Would the Android app on a Chromebook be able to do this? Similar question about the Netflix app. To just go down the list of major apps/services and review the capabilities of this new Chrome/Android OS.

  • I absolutely do NOT recommend getting any Amazon Fire tablet. I could go on a rant as to why, but lets just say I bought one and regretted it. Save yourself a from a massive disappointment and headache and buy a regular Android tablet that isnt shoving ads and Amazon services down your throat.

  • I don’t want an iPad because I don’t like the floor by three aspect ratio which to me makes watching videos a terrible experience. I don’t need a productivity tablet so iPad is out the window as well. I just want a tablet that I can use to browse the Internet and watch Netflix and other video and movie streaming services and browse Facebook and Twitter and Instagram. I also wanna be able to do all that without having to use my phone while I’m at home. It’s because I prefer my phone to have all day battery life. On top of that, if I do get a notification from Instagram or Twitter or Facebook it comes through my Apple Watch and I can just open up the app on the Amazon fire tablet instead of pulling out my phone. When I’m at home I would much rather use a tablet instead of my phone. I also don’t care about resolution as long as it’s HD or full HD because again it’s not a productivity tablet. I’m not editing videos or photos so I don’t need that high-quality screen. I have that higher resolution on my laptop and on my desktop for video and photo work. I have watched movies and TV shows and Internet videos on 8 inch Amazon tablet before and I enjoy them just as much as watching them on my 60 inch TV in my living room or my 42 inch TV in my bedroom. Sometimes I just don’t wanna watch the TV in my bedroom and I just want to lay down in bed and watch on a smaller screen but also not as small as my iPhone 7 Plus.

  • It is worth buying an Amazon fire tablet to read kindle books and watch Amazon prime videos even if you already own a better tablet. The reason is that Amazon spies on you. I bought some books perfectly legally from HumbleBundle.com. I then received repeated emails from Amazon suggesting that I buy them from Amazon. This proves that Amazon is searching my SD card for books that they think are bootleg. If I was to buy them from Amazon then they would have cost five times as much.

  • I’m using the old version of fire hd10, paid 100 bucks and I’m using it for one year now. I couldn’t get a better tablet for that price. I’m mostly using it for school things, such as using MS Office programs, presentations and even using Excel on it.

  • I just got mine last Thursday. Amazon Fire 8 with 64 gig of memory. $130 including case. I love it’s fast response. I love the size of the screen. It fits in the pockets of my cargo pants. I like to travel light and good entertainment anywhere. No complain for me.

  • I think Prime’s subscription is mainly for a single or a couple of services like the 2 day shipping and Prime Video (or whatever you prefer). The rest is useless. Actually, even if you have Echo devices you can’t benefit from your Prime membership at all! You’ll have to subscribe for Music Unlimited, Audible, and other subscriptions to really enjoy Echo devices. I believe same thing goes for the Fire HD tablet.

  • Not a game player here, but I’m now using Amazon Music HD on their free trial. I expect to subscribe. Would this Amazon Fire be a good choice for controlling AMHD, outputting USB digital audio to a Schiit Modi 3 to my analog audio system? I know you haven’t tested this, but is there any good reason that it won’t work? I’d appreciate any insight.

I am getting tired of relocating my Win laptop to the stereo listener sweet spot to listen to music.

  • I have a 7th Generation Fire HD 8 which after 2 years of solid usage stopped being able to charge anymore. From what I understand this is a fairly common problem due to the crappy Micro USB charging port that either dislodges internally or otherwise fails. Do you know if the new USB-C port with the 10th Generation HD8 or wireless charging capability with the HD 8 Plus prevent this common hardware failure issue?

  • Lol.. in the rest of the world everybody is using Android tablets and if you get a respectable one they are great. I have a Samsung and it’s a great tablet! I would not want to be caught dead using a dreaded apple product. They are absolutely horrible.

  • As usual, an excellent review! I’d like to add a few things. First, this is the first Fire HD whose OS is based on Android 9, a.k.a., «Pie.» I mention this because the software is still a bit glitchy. Most notably, at least to me, is that it’s a bit flaky when it comes to micro SD cards. Amazon tech support recommended SanDisk FWIW. Another, related, thing is a bug that causes books and magazines downloaded to an SD card to be deleted if you charge the tablet to 100% overnight. It’s happened to me several times before I figured it out and if you check out the one-star reviews at Amazon most of them are about this problem. Amazon is aware of the problem because, frankly, we let them know about it and I’m assured that they are working on it. In the interim, I’m charging the HD 10 to about 90 percent during the day. So far, so good.
I agree with you that this version is noticeably faster than the 2017 version. It’s a lot more responsive. I even like the new colors more. Hopefully, Amazon will resolve the SD card mishigas soon.

  • I’ve had 4 Amazon tablets before. Mostly the 10 and 8 inch. But the closed Amazon system pushing all amazon services on you all tj time and excluding Google play store apps were too much at the end.

And yes, I installed play store and normal apps, but then the tablet becomes so slow it is not usable anymore.

So last week, instead of buying the latest 8 inch generation, I found a much better alternative: the Lenovo tab M8 FHD. 1920×1080 Full high resolution, 3GB RAM, and a 2.3GHZ CPU. All for 120 USD. Cheaper than the 3GB amazon fire version. At least now I can use all apps I want, I am not locked in with Amazon pushing their stuff through my throat.

  • um. lol. it took me maybe 5 minutes to install the play store. connect to your wifi, turn on install apps from unknown sources, bring up silk, type «install google play store in Kindle fire hd8 and install the four apks in order. Let it update. done. if you call that a bunch of hacking……lol. I think it’s totally fine for the way i use a small tablet. reading. consuming content. social media. i have other things for gaming.

  • I’m just hoping that this thing finally getting USB C means that the regular kindles are going to be updated with USB C soon. I would love to upgrade my Kindle Paperwhite from 2014, but I have no real reason to until it’s USB C. It’s almost my last device forcing me to keep a micro USB cable around.

  • Still holding on to my Fire HDX from 2015. Is aging and seems to become slower with every update (hello evil planned obsolete) but it has a super high resolution screen and Dolby audio, something that this newer lineup does not have. It’s 2020 and I can’t believe Amazon is still using 1200 x 800 resolution on this tablets. That’s acceptable on the super cheap 7 inch model, but not on the 8 inch Fire with an MSRP of over $100.

  • I’ve side-loaded Google Play Services on my older Fire HD 10. Its quite easy to side-load. There r many step-by-step tutorials on Youtube and Web. And now I’m using any android app I want. Only catch is that, my older fire HD 10 is based on fire OS, which is built on Android 7, so any app(like say the Chive) which requires android 8 or above, will not work on the tablet. The fireOS on newer fire tablets should be on newer android. So side-load Google Play and use it as any other regular android device.

  • A least a year or so ago it wasn’t that hard to get the Play Store on a Fire Tablet I had an HD 10. There are several You Tube videos on side loading. I replaced my Fire with an iPad Mini in 2019 and although the iPad was more than double the HD 10 for me it was a better investment. I quickly grew tired of the Fire not because it was bad, the hardware was fine, but there was no way to escape the fact that it was a giant Amazon ad.

  • I love the 8 inch format for a tablet.
It’s really like a book, great for travel and on sofa.
Ipad mini user here since day 1.
The problem is: not so much choice for 8 inch tablet and the latest ipad mini is kinda « meh »…same old same old…nothin new.
At least this one is cheap…

  • Don’t buy one! I bought this very tablet and gave it to my Vietnamese wife. She tried to sign into it without an amazon account. It is now completely locked behind a PIN number that Amazon can not remove. I have to find a way to return it to them from Vietnam after purchasing in the USA. Ipad would have made more sense in my situation.

  • Only IF it’s able to install a 3rd-party store like F-Droid and Aurora (and whatever) and IF it can side-load apps; because, for example, we need to have Firefox (ESR) on it — for the device to be useful. As opposed to being useless which is what it is without these kinds of functions.:)

  • Not a fan of Amazon products…they always seems to break or have something go wrong after approx a year of use. My 2018 HD 8 tablets is acting wonky and WiFi antenna barely picks up wifi at home. Also, been through 4 FireTV sticks in like 2 years(remote issues, etc). Although, I do recommend the Kindles. Had one from 2013 that still works, although recently upgraded to PaperWhite. Good thing their products are cheap

  • The narrator speaks more like a saleman than a consumer advodate. A «budget device» at $149.? I don’t think so! Pay a little more for this or that, where the «little more» is well over 25%? I don’t think so! I own the Amazon Fire HD10 and am satisfied, but I know when I am listening to a salesman.

  • I’ve got the previous version and I found the battery life pretty poor compared to more expensive tablets. Is the new version a larger battery especially considering the higher performance?
USB Type C is a nice improvement and mini/micro USB should be illegal on devices in 2019+ 😉 other than that I think they should do a 4GB model instead of extra storage 2GB is simply not enough anymore IMO. It’s so close to being an Ipad killer for most people for general use with some minor upgrades… it make no sense to me business wise.

  • I’m sorry but all I get when I turn in my grandkids tablet Hd 10 is a set lick screen pin required, which I thought we’d done yesterday. I also only seem to be able to drag down the info from the top if the screen where it shows my modem and blue tooth. I haven’t even seen the screen you are on. Is there a dummy version for old grammas to get this set up done and working for grandkids.

  • I am contemplating purchasing this, and I am only going to use it for reading books online-from my public library. Can this device make the font large? Is there an adjustment for viewing in bright sunlight, varying the brightness? Thank you.

  • I just got my new fire 10 a week ago, problem #1 cannot get my gmail account back, #2 also my bank acct app is on the home page but when tapped it goes to acct where the small circle spins and goes back to home and lastly my microphone on the keyboard has disappeared probably my bad as I have been trying to to fix things because Amazon is no help at this time no phone tech support. Thanks so much Linda

  • Do you know of any way to have the newer Fire HD tablets connect to a tv if there is no internet or cell service? So no wifi options. I’ve tried the HDMI adapter, but that didn’t work. I guess because it’s a newer model. That’s what I heard at least. I just want to watch the videos I’ve already downloaded to the Fire HD 8″ tablet on a larger screen. Would it work on a laptop? Again, no wifi options.

  • Thanks for your excellent videos on the HD 8 Plus. I have had an HD 10 for the last several years and found the size to be too awkward, especially when trying to hold it and read in bed at night. I was considering a Samsung or Lenovo tablet but found that I could really do everything I wanted with a Fire tablet with the Google Store sideloaded. Your reviews and demonstrations sank the deal for me and I ordered the HD8 Plus, the charging dock, and a cover tonight. Thanks again.

UPDATE: I have had the HD 8 Plus for over two weeks now and love it so much more than the HD 10. It is much easier to handle, and even though the screen is smaller, the display is still very easy to view and read text, images, and videos. I haven’t listened to the speakers that much since I connect via Bluetooth earbuds for better sound, but the speakers seem adequate for a tablet of this size. After owning the HD 10 for so many years, I would strongly recommend that anyone considering a Fire tablet give a lot of thought to the 8-inch models.

  • I can’t believe it’s 2020 and fire os is still a thing. I used to have one of these things back in 2014 and it was horrible. From what I remember you couldn’t even change the wallpaper. Want YouTube? I hope you like using the browser! I mean it works fine from my experience but just to point that out.

  • Adware in form of lock screen costs more and then full of advertising after paid £94 too much as can’t nova launcher properly and flush away adware.
Can load google play, but gmail attachments currently won’t download.
Putting mine in a draw as a disappointment

  • Get a Samsung Galaxy Tab A instead. I have the 10inch version, it’s been a solid tool for me for several years now. I bought an Amazon Fire Tablet a few years ago, returned it in less than a week. Hardware performance was decent, but it’s basically a sales platform trying to sell you stuff. I wanted a tablet not a marketing department. If amazon starts giving them away, I might take one for FREE, but I’m not paying for their marketing to be waved in front of my face.

  • Tiny core and simple system monitor from play to show what’s going on.

3gb is good for webpage tabs staying in ram when you go back to them, a example being shopping and banking or PayPal all open, going back to a tab makes it reload and that’s not good for banking, more ram keeps it.

More ram has nothing to do with loading but for reloading.

On the old 1.5gb one it fills the ram and pushes apps out when a game is loaded

Try the apps on the play store and see

Oh and from start a fire 8 has about 68 things running plus your own
Killing them frees up CPU even though they say they don’t use CPU

I’ve just got a 3gb one but I’d say 2gb is OK, 3gb being better for a phone so you keep the phone in ram while googling or gaming

I’d like to see how long the Alexa app takes to get to the play part
    On the 1.5gb it takes 60 secs+

  • Amazon is not the only company that is just «refreshing» their tablet line-up and not upgrading them… I suspect because fewer and fewer people are using tablets these days.
Also the cameras on tablets are kinda a «whatever» thing… I know of NOBODY that takes pictures with their tablets… I do know of a lot of people that use them to scan QR codes or barcodes. (I have asked, and they just look at me like I’m crazy and that’s a stupid idea)

  • While I’ve used Android phones for the past 8 years, I couldn’t get into my Fire 8 two years back at all — it was just so irredeemably painful to use. Got myself an used iPad Pro for 350 and haven’t looked back since — that thing is a joy to use:3

  • Amazon has crippled the Android OS so that it will only work with their products and ones they’ve approved. I buy a tablet to do what I want, not what Amazon wants. Don’t be seduced by the low price. You will not have the flexibility or control of your own tablet.

  • Two odd positives: (1) it supports Widevine Level 1.0, which is apparently essentially for watching Netflix in 720p (believe it or not the Galaxy Tab A 8 only goes to 600p despite having a 720p screen because its DRM is only Level 3); and (2) I believe that Amazon pushes out more security updates than any other Android maker. Lack of YouTube official app and lack of GMail app are a huge negative. If it had 100% sRGB gamut I’d buy it in an instant. As it is, I’m stuck with a much larger iPad and the iPad mini is just too expensive.

  • The HD 10 has a superb (full sRGB gamut) screen. Still waiting for the HD 8 to match it. I can live with 720p but really want the extended color range. Until then this is still just a Kindle reader with the ability to load web pages, so cheap that forgetting it in the seat pocket on a flight isn’t a big deal.

  • The background music is very distracting to me. I had to give up after two minutes.I suppose it must benefit some people so I wonder what the balance is. I’m not actually complaining — I guess I have some undiagnosed mental illness that causes me to react differently than the sane majority, so I bow to their status before departing.
I’m happy with the Verge’s print content, so maybe I’m not missing too much.

  • Where did you get your stand for your 10 I got one from Amazon very disappointed I also have an 8 inch gloves that stand the only other thing both keep shutting off five minutes into any YouTube video I don’t know what’s wrong with them your help would be appreciated

  • To all, if you side load an app to this device, such as Google Play Store, you will not be able to use your Netflix account on the device. The Netflix app will not run with side loaded applications in place. I own one. I side loaded Google Play Store and now Netflix app won’t run on my Kindle Fire HD8. The device is great besides Netflix’s over-zealous corporate BS.

  • I have the fire 7. I love it. I have had an iPad before and I honestly don’t understand why mom gamers pay for flagship tablets. Unless you are a gamer, there is no real reason to pay more than $200 for a tablet to surf the web and stream. I love my Fire 7.
