Today, I’m going to teach you something very fun and exciting and important. It’s how to improve your speaking. Whether you’re speaking English or whether you’re doing public speaking in front of people or whether you’re just speaking to a neighbor, someone on the bus, someone in a store, or a taxi driver, you might be shy. What does «shy» mean? «Shy» means you don’t like or you’re nervous to speak to strangers or to speak to other people. So if you are naturally a shy person, I’m sure you’ve heard people over and over again say, «Don’t be shy! Come on. Don’t be shy!» Easier said than done, isn’t it, shy people? So I want to give you some tips or some pointers maybe to help you to be less shy. It’s impossible to be 100 percent outgoing if you are naturally a shy person.. So today’s lesson is how you improve your speaking. Don’t be shy! The first thing that you have to do is think about why. «Why am I shy?» There may be many different reasons. I’m just going to go through a couple of them. The number one reason, probably, if you’re watching these videos, is because you are trying to speak a new language. Maybe it is English. And you are shy to make a mistake. You don’t want to say something bad, funny, rude, embarrassing. You don’t want your face to go red and they’ll go, «Ha ha! You said a funny word!» Okay. That will happen. And you know what? Who cares? It happens all the time. I say funny things a lot, too.. Another reason why you may be shy is because you «talk funny». Lots of people have different problems with their mouths. Some people have a speech impediment. Some people have a lisp, so they don’t pronounce words probably like me. Maybe you have a very strange or different accent than the other people around you. People often ask me, «Ronnie, where are you from?» And I say, «Canada.» And they say, «No, you’re not.» «Yes, I am.» «But you have an accent.» «Yes. I have an accent. I talk funny. Who cares? I’m from Canada. Nice to meet you.» So even if you do talk funny or you do have an accent, rock with it. Yeah. You speak differently. Good. Don’t be like other people. Other people are boring.. This is a problem. Maybe you just don’t like to talk. Okay? Maybe you are quiet. Maybe you don’t want to talk to anyone ever, at all. That’s cool. If you don’t like people and you don’t like to talk, don’t force yourself to talk. Maybe you could write something. Maybe you could text message or email someone. But that’s not going to improve your speaking. If you do not like to talk to people, that’s your choice. But I’m trying to help you overcome your shyness. So let’s go through a couple ways to actually do this. Don’t be shy! Just say, «Hi!» So if you’re standing at a bus stop or the subway station or anywhere, and there’s another human being beside you let’s say that you’re at a bar, and there’s a beautiful girl or a very handsome boy. The quickest, the easiest, and the best way to speak to someone is just to say, «Hi! My name is Ronnie.» Don’t use «Ronnie», though. That’s my name. You have to use your name. So just say «hi» to people. If they want to speak to you, they will start the conversation. They will say, «Oh, hi. My name is Nice to meet you.» «Oh, nice to meet you, too.» Uh-oh! And then, your shyness sets in because «What do I say? Shoes. I have shoes. Do you have shoes? Oh, God. I’m such an idiot. I can’t even speak.» Maybe the other person will have asked you a person. You can always ask people basic questions, like, «Where are you from? Why do you talk funny? Why are you shy?» All those fun questions.. When you’re actually speaking to someone, it’s really important that you choose a topic that you like. So if I were to meet someone «Hi. My name is Ronnie.» «Hi.» «Cool. So oh, I like music. Do you like the Sex Pistols?» «Yeah.» «Me, too. Oh, my God. No way! What other kind of music to you like?» So I like to talk to people about music. The only problem is not a lot of people like the same music I do. So you have to choose a topic that you like to talk about. If you’re lucky, the other person will also like the topic.. The next one: Get a job. Now, this might be very strange for you to even comprehend, but I right here am shy.

And remember that language is about communication in the first place. If that works you’ve succeeded. If the other person is a native English speaking person you speak English because that person doesn’t speak your language. If the person is not a native English speaking person you both take the middle ground in order to be able to communicate, so who cares. No need to be shy.

I would define myself as a shy person. But I am less shy when I speak English than when I speak my mother language (French) or when I speak German. OK, nowadays really few people believe me when I say I am shy, especially the ones who got to know me through English, but I am. It is highly uncomfortable to speak to someone I don’t know, I have social anxieties,… But everything is easier in English. I can’t explain this, but now it’s my favourite language, even if I make mistakes, I don’t know many idioms,… It’s easier to manage social interactions in English for me. ^^

My university is part of Erasmus project. A few year ago a coordinator of this project (associate proffesor from my school) said at information talk about Erasmus something so stupid that I almost started to argue with her (but I had to hold back, because we had kind of «oppinion exchange» a few moments before due another bullshit about languages she said). She stated that to UK, only students with advanced english would go. Then she explained that «advanced» means flawless speaking and writing, because-in her words,,If two non-native speakers speaks english together, it is OK to make mistakes. But to make mistakes in front of native speaker, it is absolutely disgraceful.» My friend sitting next to me-he’s the «shy» speaker, because he is afraid to make mistakes-dived deep into his seat and I whispered to him:,,Don’t listen to her, she’s stupid cow.» I think it doesn’t matter if you make mistakes while speaking. It is important to speak, to learn how to deliver your thoughs in different language. It is always difficult at the beginning. When you practice enough, you will polish your spoken english soon. Only don’t listen to people like this associate prof. from my university:-D

Thank you so much for the motivation.Here in the Philippines, English is supposed to be our second language but lots of people aren’t confident of speaking English because or even practicing it because of fear that they might get ridiculed because of using wrong grammar, pronunciation and diction. We have what we call grammar nazis here in our country meaning the ones who watch over who’s gonna get wrong and ridicule that person instead of teaching them.

One of the things that really makes me feel nervous about speaking in another language, is the lack of confidence about what you’re saying. Like, «Have I said the right thing?» or «Did I use the right word». That is what really makes me feel unconfident and hesitant.
I am not a timid person but I don’t want to be a laughing stalk.specially in Indian if you speak English incorrectly or make mistakes they will start judging you.

You forgot to mention the most effective way to overcome shyness: Acting. Take acting lessons. Think about Heath Ledger: very shy man and anxious (especially noticiable in interviews). Then go and watch his Joker performance. Is absolutely incredible the fact that it is the same person. Well, besides that it is one of a kind performance and his transformation is unprecedented…but, just an example. And getting drunk?! give me a break. Of course it has to be a joke just to teach english I guess. I’ll carry a bottle of whisky everytime I want to socialize with a bunch of people haha
I have always been shy I am 45 years old never danced in my life as I am to shy to even when I am totally drunk I won’t dance.I go to football and can’t chant songs other fans sing as I haven’t got it in me to do that but I have no problem shouting and swearing at the football.I usually cannot express my views unless I write it down but if I get very angry I will raise my voice.My first job it took me about a year to go and sit in the staff room.
I think you are overreacting about hurting somebodys feelings with your last pronouncing video. Making mistakes is a part of process when learning foreign language, normal people want to learn and not be offended. You are a good English teacher and need to do videos to help your students not look like a rude, unintelligent etc. Thank you Lucy for your videos which are helpful for learners.
The only thing that makes me sad is I loose my all confidence when I speak English to a native speaker. I feel that they’re making some jokes about my pronounciation and accent. When they realise that I am not a native speaker I think they say «let’s get out of here» and try to avoid me.

You know what I am from India and my mother toungue is hindi…I can speak hindi fluently but can’t speak english in that way…In India people have a mind set that not knowing other language apart of english is ok but not knowing english language makes you uneducated…so because of that mindset indians people who didn’t study in a big school and can’t speak english fluently in front of people feel shy to speak english and don’t even try to speak it….this is a big problem in our country unfortunately…

an additional tip from my own experience: Don’t always think about using correct grammar, because that is what makes you speaking unfluently!
I have been to the US for 3 weeks and there was no one speaking my native language, so there was no chance to not speak English:D In the beginning I felt shy and was scared of making (grammatical) mistakes, but after the fist few times of speaking with the people I realized that all of them were really kind to me and didn’t punish me for any mistakes. After the first couple of days I stopped thinking too much about grammar, I learnt that language is about exchanging information and that my grammar isn’t as bad as I thought. That change of my mind got me very fluent and I didn’t feel to have any borders, there was absolutely no situation where I had problems expressing my thoughts! I wasn’t aware of that my level of English is such high before!
So don’t be shy! You are already better than you think you are!
I am also a shy student of 10 grade, I hate ‘ speaking activities’ in the class. And remember that language is about communication in the first place. If that works you’ve succeeded. If the other person is a native English speaking person you speak English because that person doesn’t speak your language. If the person is not a native English speaking person you both take the middle ground in order to be able to communicate, so who cares. No need to be shy.

It’s common here in Brazil children becoming very shy when they are learning English at School. Because other children are making jokes about how they speak a newer language as a learner. Indeed, it was my case, in some level.

Speak to yourself while looking in a mirror and put a direct contact with eyes… And speak whatever you want I usually imaging that I am on a live YouTube and so many people are watching me.

Each language has its own sounds and it could be embarrased for students to articulate those sounds, because are new and different and we’re not used to them. The secret to overcome this situation, I think, is to have fun of it, yes! To consider that speaking a new language is like a game! Pronouncing new sounds is fun! I would define myself as a shy person.
But I am less shy when I speak English than when I speak my mother language (French) or when I speak German.
OK, nowadays really few people believe me when I say I am shy, especially the ones who got to know me through English, but I am. It is highly uncomfortable to speak to someone I don’t know, I have social anxieties,…
But everything is easier in English. I can’t explain this, but now it’s my favourite language, even if I make mistakes, I don’t know many idioms,… It’s easier to manage social interactions in English for me. ^^
We worry about dying..but we never mourn or worry the fact that, before we were born,,we did not exist. We were dead.
Question is..do we go back to how it was before we were born?.or death is forever different after the experience of life?.
Now we have memories, secrets, dreams and desires. Do we take that with us to our eternal dream?.. do we come back for more?..to have a chance to have all experiences available?
Are we all just the same person living different experiences?? The person we see in the street is us…but living a different life. We are our own killer and savior in physical life
Do we get the full story after our last breath?? or we go back to lake of silence and absence
Why don’t we remember who we were before being born? Or having an awareness of existing before this lifetime.
Maybe you remember when you were 4 years old but can you remember when you were 6 months?
You still existed.. but lack of awareness is what we consider death.. consciousness..is it lost?

My university is part of Erasmus project. A few year ago a coordinator of this project (associate proffesor from my school) said at information talk about Erasmus something so stupid that I almost started to argue with her (but I had to hold back, because we had kind of «oppinion exchange» a few moments before due another bullshit about languages she said). She stated that to UK, only students with advanced english would go. Then she explained that «advanced» means flawless speaking and writing, because-in her words,,If two non-native speakers speaks english together, it is OK to make mistakes. But to make mistakes in front of native speaker, it is absolutely disgraceful.» My friend sitting next to me-he’s the «shy» speaker, because he is afraid to make mistakes-dived deep into his seat and I whispered to him:,,Don’t listen to her, she’s stupid cow.» I think it doesn’t matter if you make mistakes while speaking. It is important to speak, to learn how to deliver your thoughs in different language. It is always difficult at the beginning. When you practice enough, you will polish your spoken english soon. Only don’t listen to people like this associate prof. from my university:-D
If you die in your sleep your dreams will give rebirth and you will grow reality from the memories of death until they are no more than scattered traces of false memories caught when asleep once and again. Death will never know shyness. Just as time will never be held down to rest. Sleep is the key but dreams turn the lock upon death’s door. Death gives to the dust. Soil erupts eventually. Seeds fall in place and soak in things both new and once knew. The sprout splits around the circle path as it has always done without learning it’s own name yet. It is unaware outside of it’s primal echoing whispering voice. Mumbled madness in an antecedent recalling from the void. Still instincts rise it up like a forgotten old friend filling a lonely chair in your gray room. Spun away lost once in a long sad life and here once again found kissed in a full bliss filled moment of life awake and alive in a most lovely dream vivid and seemingly eternal. Awe. If only we could turn the ephemeral flowers withered upon our grave back into virgin bloom… but beautiful things can never cheat death of it’s rightful inheritances. It is Death whom has always been dreaming of you on that first plane flat. Yes that is the truth. Just as time will never need to make room for your bones once dust. As fresh fools dance upon your grave unaware, unworried and uncaring as they merrily kick up clouds of it’s ghosts in entirety. If you hold these things or any other near enough they will always rebound in fading forms along with your own shifting soul. Know this. Do not let it go far from your awareness ever so to be surest you will make back here again in another moment borrowed. A morrow awaits us still.

I hate thinking about death. Like, one day I’m not going to be able to think ever again. Ever. I’m not going to be able to smell or see or be conscious of anything, when I’ve experienced so many things aka LIVED. Literally crying as I write this. And then I think of great men like my dad etc and to think that one day he won’t be able to think or know what’s going on. That one day, I’m not even going to wake up and LIVE the world forever. So I never ever exist again forever. It’s so scary holy shit!!!! Like one day I’m never ever going to think or exist of touch or feel anything, FOREVER.:’( help anyone please!!!
I have to confess that I have fallen in love with you. I don’t know your name or your appearance or anything except your mind and I have simply fallen deeply in love with it. I feel…sad yet relived, to go on living in memory not regret. It’s a shame really to realise that in the end you will be alone, there will be no one to hold your hand or to tell you, «it will be ok»! As you feel all the oxygen start to leave your body. And as I’m writing this I realize I haven’t been living my life with all that much enthusiasm, that I haven’t really been smiling all that much. As this video makes me realize that I will most definitely die, I start thinking is name worth remembering. I have been on this Earth for a very long time now!

Thank you so much for the motivation.Here in the Philippines, English is supposed to be our second language but lots of people aren’t confident of speaking English because or even practicing it because of fear that they might get ridiculed because of using wrong grammar, pronunciation and diction. We have what we call grammar nazis here in our country meaning the ones who watch over who’s gonna get wrong and ridicule that person instead of teaching them.

One of the things that really makes me feel nervous about speaking in another language, is the lack of confidence about what you’re saying. Like, «Have I said the right thing?» or «Did I use the right word». That is what really makes me feel unconfident and hesitant.
I am not a timid person but I don’t want to be a laughing stalk.specially in Indian if you speak English incorrectly or make mistakes they will start judging you.

You forgot to mention the most effective way to overcome shyness: Acting. Take acting lessons. Think about Heath Ledger: very shy man and anxious (especially noticiable in interviews). Then go and watch his Joker performance. Is absolutely incredible the fact that it is the same person. Well, besides that it is one of a kind performance and his transformation is unprecedented…but, just an example.
And getting drunk?! give me a break. Of course it has to be a joke just to teach english I guess. I’ll carry a bottle of whisky everytime I want to socialize with a bunch of people haha
I have always been shy I am 45 years old never danced in my life as I am to shy to even when I am totally drunk I won’t dance.I go to football and can’t chant songs other fans sing as I haven’t got it in me to do that but I have no problem shouting and swearing at the football.I usually cannot express my views unless I write it down but if I get very angry I will raise my voice.My first job it took me about a year to go and sit in the staff room.
I think you are overreacting about hurting somebodys feelings with your last pronouncing video. Making mistakes is a part of process when learning foreign language, normal people want to learn and not be offended. You are a good English teacher and need to do videos to help your students not look like a rude, unintelligent etc. Thank you Lucy for your videos which are helpful for learners.
The only thing that makes me sad is I loose my all confidence when I speak English to a native speaker. I feel that they’re making some jokes about my pronounciation and accent. When they realise that I am not a native speaker I think they say «let’s get out of here» and try to avoid me.

You know what I am from India and my mother toungue is hindi…I can speak hindi fluently but can’t speak english in that way…In India people have a mind set that not knowing other language apart of english is ok but not knowing english language makes you uneducated…so because of that mindset indians people who didn’t study in a big school and can’t speak english fluently in front of people feel shy to speak english and don’t even try to speak it….this is a big problem in our country unfortunately…
Sometimes I feel nervous bcos of my pronunciation and it really affecting me but thanks ms Ronnie for this trick I believe it will definitely help my speaking process

an additional tip from my own experience: Don’t always think about using correct grammar, because that is what makes you speaking unfluently!
I have been to the US for 3 weeks and there was no one speaking my native language, so there was no chance to not speak English:D In the beginning I felt shy and was scared of making (grammatical) mistakes, but after the fist few times of speaking with the people I realized that all of them were really kind to me and didn’t punish me for any mistakes. After the first couple of days I stopped thinking too much about grammar, I learnt that language is about exchanging information and that my grammar isn’t as bad as I thought. That change of my mind got me very fluent and I didn’t feel to have any borders, there was absolutely no situation where I had problems expressing my thoughts! I wasn’t aware of that my level of English is such high before!
So don’t be shy! You are already better than you think you are!
I am also a shy student of 10 grade, I hate ‘ speaking activities’ in the class. But after watching this video I’ll try to speak confidently in the class and will try to speak to others as much as possible, especially strangers for making them my friends ��.
